a large, bony marine fish with a three-lobed tail fin and fleshy pectoral fins, formerly thought to be extinct but rediscovered in 1938 off the coast of South Africa. It is the sole living member of a class of fish (Coelacanthimorpha) that was thought to have died out 66 million years ago.
